Wedding Bagpiper
I have been piping for wedding celebrations for ten years. The ceremonies range through many religious denominations and venues, such as large and small churches, Sonnenburg Gardens in Canandaigua, New York, Belhurst Castle in Geneva, New York, St. Mary’s Cathedral in Rochester, New York, and on the shores of Canadice Lake in Canadice, New York.
I have played at well over 40 weddings since I began participating in people’s ceremonies. Every ceremony is different, and I view each one as unique to the couple and their family. When I discuss music with the couple, I listen for who they are and what songs or tunes will best suit their marriage.
Marches are usually chosen for procession and recession, and after the ceremony, jigs, reels and strathspeys are a good way to celebrate the occasion.
Jigs are in 6/8 meter and feel faster than marches. Reels are also faster rythms for traditional Scottish and Irish dancing. Strathspeys are a traditional Scottish Highland dance with a complex rhythm and set of steps. Generally most tunes are about 3-4 minutes long, but it is common to string together several songs or tunes into a set, or medley, to increase the length of the playing.
A good bagpiper is gracious and accommodating and tries to make the ceremony work well for the wedding couple. I am available to meet with the bride and groom beforehand to choose music for their celebration.
The price for a wedding ceremony starts at $250. Long distance travel and extra playing time may be an additional cost. We can discuss your needs and make adjustments as necessary. Additional pipers and drummers are also available. For more information about ensembles, read about the bagpiping band.
Highland pipes are a proud and regal-sounding instrument and add a wonderful feeling of strength to a wedding ceremony.
